What's YOUR Superpower?

What's YOUR Superpower?

SuperPowers/Princess Powers—Yes That Can Be A Thing Too

Instagram is a funny thing.  I’m still getting used to the ‘ways’ of this form of social media.  The ironic thing for me is that I have a bird necklace.  It’s cute and silver and it’s the TWITTER bird, I think.  I just thought it was cute, and rather than get a bird necklace on Etsy that showcased me as the Mama bird with my three baby birds, I liked the simplicity of this one bird.  It wasn’t until several months later that I realized it was the Twitter bird.  And I don’t tweet.  The irony for me?  Before I joined Instagram, I wasn’t really on social media.  Sure I have a Facebook account.  But sometimes I’ll go on there twice a year, sometimes I’ll go once a week, sometimes I’ll go every day for a week then forget about it for ten months.

However, I started an IG account when I started this blog several months ago and I’ve found this wonderful ‘Bookstagram’ community.  No, I have nowhere near the following that other people have, but I’m okay with that.  I’m just enjoying other people’s mutual appreciation of books.  Yes, I really am a bookworm at heart.

Rambling aside, I have no idea how Instagram followers find other people, but I randomly happen upon accounts.  And, notwithstanding the odd custom of following to unfollow, I don’t tend to follow people just so they’ll notice me.  Earlier this week, however, someone ‘liked’ one of my squares, and I found something interesting.

[PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ISN’T AN AD]

I found this awesome shirt on @freetobekids that says “Love is my superpower”. It’s like they read my mind!

Why?  Every single time a patient comes in to see me wearing Frozen gear, I have the same sets of questions for them.  It goes something like this:

Dr. Bookworm: Oh, you like Frozen?
Patient: (usually silently nods or rambles about the movie for a bit)
Dr. B: Who is your favorite sister?
Pt: Elsa (9 times out of 10, it’s Elsa)
Dr. B: Who do you think has better powers?
Pt: Elsa…because she freezes things.
Dr. B: But Anna has a better super power.
Pt: (Stares at me blankly because they don’t know what I’m talking about.)
Pt’s parent: (Stares at me blankly because they don’t know what I’m talking about.)
Dr. B: You didn’t know that Anna has a super power?
Pt: No.
Dr. B: Anna has the power of...LOVE!  Anna shows her sister unconditional love—that she loves her no matter what.  So that’s why Anna is my favorite.

Two reactions: they either giggle or stare at me blankly.  But secretly they are thinking that they still chose the better sister.

I likely have gone through this scenario no less than a hundred times.  And, so far, only one of my patients has told me that Anna has the power of love before I get to my ‘punchline’.  Clearly she’s a kindred spirit.

Anyway, I saw this “Love is my super power” shirt and I immediately interrupted Mr. Bookworm’s writing to tell him.  Then I had a mini-rant about how they don’t come in adult sizes.  Until I realized that they DO come in adult sizes.  Guess what’s in my shopping basket now?

Maybe I should be designing t-shirts as a side job.  Think my sis (an artist and graphic designer) might help me out?  :D

PS If you haven't seen on Instagram, we had a winner for our 12 Must-Have Picture Books Themed Giveaway.  We randomly chose a name out of a hat (AKA Star Wars bowl) from all the entries and Cara P won!  Her copy of April and Esme Tooth Fairies by Bob Graham should be arriving to her tomorrow.  Congratulations, Cara!
