Happy Birthday, Harry Potter!

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter!

My Bookworm girls always come back to Harry Potter. While I missed out on the craze when the novels were originally published, I was so happy to join in when Mini Me discovered the books at age 8. Little Lion’s introduction came much earlier as we started (re)watching the movies as Mini Me finished the books so Little Lion was introduced to Hogwarts at age 4.

I’m ever so grateful to JK Rowling for inspiring generations of readers and non-readers alike.

Happy Birthday, Harry and JK Rowling!

We had a fabulous read-along of the first book last summer—if you’d like to read our thoughts click here, here, and here. I also include some pictures of our trip last year to the WB Studios in London that houses the actual film props from all of the Harry Potter films. It’s amazing and definitely worth the journey. You can also check out our First Pages discussion if you want to see what makes the beginning of the entire series so engaging from the get-go.

What have you learned the most from JK Rowling and the Harry Potter series?

Mini Me: Don’t be afraid to kill off your characters. Certain characters in certain stories just have to die for the greater good of the plot. Fave book in the series—DEATHLY HALLOWS because all the plot threads come together.

Little Lion: I’ve learned that magic comes in all shapes and sizes. Fave book in the series—PRISONER OF AZKABAN is the most interesting because it’s full of surprises. Plus I like Buckbeak.

Mr. Bookworm: [The boy was too tired to respond.] Fave book in the series-PRISONER OF AZKABAN.

Me: I’ve learned that you need to trust your gut when you’re writing and trust where your writing takes you. I’ve also learned that a fandom can build friendships. :D Fave book in the series: remember my confession that I hadn’t read HP until our read-along last summer? Well, I can’t choose a favorite because I’ve only read the first one. <gasp> I know. In my defense, it’s harder for me to read the books because I’ve seen all the films so I already know what happens. But I’ll get there. Some day.
