Aru Shah x 2
Aru Shah and the End of Time + Aru Shah and the Song of Death by Roshani Chokshi
Little Lion Bookworm:
The Aru Shah books are absolutely genius. They are filled with action, and great characters, and Indian mythology, but most of all, humor. In the first book, Aru meets the gods in her Spider-Man pajamas, and goes on her entire adventure wearing that. They find out they are female reincarnations of the Pandava brothers from Hindu mythology and bring a pigeon Subala, nicknamed Boo, along on their quest. When she and her soul sister Mini go adventuring, they reach a magical Costco called the Night Bazaar, and Aru is bursting for an Oreo until Mini opens her backpack for security and had a packet there the whole time.
The second book is even more hilarious, and I definitely think Aru is bonding with me through the pages. At the end, on her Lord of the Rings-themed 13th birthday, she had a picture of Legolas on her cake, just like I did on my 9th birthday. Their quest is to try to get the love god's bow and arrow back, because when it was stolen, the thief began turning people into Heartless zombies. And (spoiler alert!) when her crush Aiden goes on their adventure with them with his camera named Shadowfax (after Gandalf's horse, of course) and turns out to be the reincarnation of the Pandava brothers' wife, they all call him Wifey. (I really feel bad for him there.)
[Dr Bookworm: The third book in the series, Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes , was released a few days ago! We are eagerly awaiting its arrival.]
