How do you balance the calm with the anxiety? The need to know current news with the need not to bombard your kids with every detail of what’s going on?
I woke up this morning realizing that it’s been almost 20 years since I was accepted to med school off the wait list. I like to call it my last minute decision to go to med school but it was anything but last minute.
I’ve started writing this post in many different ways as there are so MANY doctors I am grateful to on Doctors’ Day. And so MANY patients as well, both still kids and some now adults, and some are now gone.
But what I keep thinking about this year are those OTHER doctors who helped me become a doctor. No, not my attendings, though I’m grateful to most of them too.
I’m talking about my friends in medical school. There were many of them but there are several who were by my side the whole time, and who I still consider as close to my heart even if we only talk a few times a year, or even if has been YEARS since we’ve spoken.

Earlier this month, the world lost an amazing doctor. The thing is that it's not only a loss for the children's hospital that he tirelessly advocated for and for the patients and families he took care of, it's a huge loss for the doctors he was training.
Last year, I wrote about the many women physicians who have inspired me along my own journey, most importantly my mom. This year, I'd like to write about the many patients who inspire me.
There have been so many families who have let me into their lives. Too many to count, so many that share the little things that matter so much. I feel honored to be a part of that, a tiny part of helping out their kids. And too many details for me to write without invading privacy.
Thank your for the privilege and the trust you put into us as your child's doctor.
