Hedgehugs
My nephew, Gummy, is a huge fan of hedgehogs, as are my bookworm girls. Imagine his delight when he found that Mini Me has a similar hedgehog plush as his beloved, Hedgie? During one of our visits to them, they spent the entire week with the hedgehogs (and cousins) bonding.
Just as the explosion of unicorns, mermaids, llamas, and all things avocado, the hedgehog has been a recent staple in our society. So there has been a huge influx of hedgehog related books as well.
One of our favorites is Hedgehugs by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper. What’s so great about this book? Well, Horace and Hattie are besties. And all they want to do is share a hug….but obviously that can be a challenge for an animal with spiky quills!
Hedgehugs is a cute book that emphasizes friendship, but also perseverance. Horace and Hattie don’t give up on their quest, and their reward is a sweet satisfying best friend hug <SPOILER ALERT>. But I’m sure you saw that coming, right? Along the way, there are a few fun mishaps and giggles, but, as I said, the two hedgehogs keep going to achieve their goal. A must-have for hedgehog fans.
My nephews’ thoughts: Gummy (age 5) says he likes the book because “it’s cute”. E (age 10) says he likes it because it shows that “If you want something bad enough, don’t let anything stop you from doing it!”
Bonus: Horace and Hattie have many other adventures in Hedgehugs and the Hattiepillar, Hopping Hot, and Autumn Hide-and-Squeak.
Tell Dr. Bookworm!
Do you or your little one have a current favorite animal, mystical or otherwise? Let me know in the comments. I don’t think we will ever lose our love of dragons over here. But hedgehogs are up there too.
