Colin's Grandma

Okay, we admit it. We love vampires. All kinds of vampires, especially ones who befriend a duck as Colin does (begrudgingly) in Colin’s Castle. Does Colin’s world get turned upside down when his grandma comes to visit?

Yes, of course it does.

I’m late in posting my review of Colin’s Castle by Holly Swain, but first—especially because it’s banned books week coming up, I have to tell you how I initially discovered Colin’s Castle. I saw it in the featured picture book section at my local library! This is important because there have been many books that have been banned in my city over the last 5 years or so. It’s a contentious issue as there have been many people who are trying to dictate what others can or cannot read or have access to.

Finding new books to enjoy, about all kinds of topic, is a freedom that we should be able to enjoy.

Back to Colin—the moment I saw the cover of Colin’s Castle with a whimsical vampire and even more whimsical duck on the cover, I was in. And Swain doesn’t disappoint. Duck reminds me a lot of Duck in I Love You Already! by Jory John and illustrated by Benji Davies because they are both persistent and can spot a kindred spirit a mile away.

In Colin’s Grandma, Colin’s grandmother comes to visit and tries to change everything about him! Including his friendship with his (now) roommate and bestie, Duck. Colin’s Grandma is a fun story about balancing who you are and found plus biological family. Basically, this second picture book solidifies Colin’s friendship with Duck. And the pictures are just as whimsical and beautiful as the first one. It’s perfect for this upcoming season of family holidays and more.

PS the third installment by Swain, Colin’s Monster has just been released in the United Kingdom but not yet in the U.S. But this vamp-loving bookish blogger can’t wait until it comes out here.
