Every New Yearβs Day, my Lola (grandma) would hold a raffle.
When I was little, my mom would get a few new Hallmark ornaments every year. Our ornaments were handmade school projects and a mish-mash of gathered ornaments from years past, and I loved our tree very much.
A belated recounting of our annual trip to the L.A.Times Festival of Books
Mr. Bookworm and I are still holding onto a lot of family-oriented activities. Like our Family movie nights on Fridays, originally inspired by one of my attendings when I was a resident.
My Lola (my grandma on my momβs side) and I were close. She had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. Still, even after sheβs been gone for 18 years, I can picture her smile (with bright red lipstick!) and hear her laughter and it makes me smile too.
Last year I wrote about my Lola's New Year's Day tradition--she would raffle off prizes or money to all her grandchildren. It was always a fun gathering, an extra day of bonding. I've always wanted to carry on her tradition and last year I figured out a way to do it remotely....with books, of course.
There are many things I could admire about Lola, especially today on what would have been her 96th birthday. I could admire the fact that she had a PhD, at a time when attaining a higher education for a female could not have been easy. I could admire the way she traveled the world with my Lolo, and then continued to do so years after he passed away. She lived for 17 years after him, and I can only imagine her grief. Even now, for me, she has been gone for 16 years and I miss her every single day.
What I choose to remember most and admire the most about my Lola is her generous spirit.
