By Way of Re-introduction
For those of you who are new to the blog, I thought a re-introduction is in order. My name is Melanie. I’m a bookworm, a writer, a mom, a pediatrician, a wife, a dreamer, and more. I live in the same county I grew up in even though I said I’d never come back. But two (three) kids later, we are still here, mostly because we love living near the ocean and because we love the warm weather. And my side of the family is here even though Mr. Bookworm’s family has moved to the colder Colorado area.
I’ve been a pediatrician for 17 years—the first huge chunk of that in training at CHOC and then in the CHOC Children’s outpatient clinics. I worked part time for years (still do, just more hours) because I wanted to also be a mostly stay-at-home mom. I have a baby who had trisomy 18 and she passed away as an infant. She is my middle child, in between Mini Me (now 14) and Little Lion (now 10). I joined Surf City Pediatrics a little over four years ago and have loved being a part of the community in which I live. Though I miss CHOC and the patient population there, I’m grateful to have more continuity be able to be a tiny part of my patient families’ lives.
I’m a writer. I’ve always been a writer and have my undergrad and graduate degree in Creative Writing. My husband is also a writer (plus software engineer) and my two bookworm girls are avid readers and prolific writers. Though I love writing, I do admit that my girls have outstripped my abilities at their young ages. I’m sure they will be published before I am.
But I still love to write and create so I continue to work on my novels and picture books, and here on the blog too.
Since I’m (hopefully) finally back to blogging, I thought I’d share some of my posts that I think reflect who I am. Somehow I still have a lot of visitors to this site, even though it has been stagnant since the pandemic began, and I’m grateful for the readership.
Here’s a little bit about me:
The Wand: me and my bleeding heart/nostalgia
Macy: my little one who passed away who has shaped who I am as a person, but also as a physician
Special Delivery: the book I wrote when I was pregnant with Macy, illustrated by my sister who also orchestrated its publication so we could share it with other families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss
