Here's a confession that you may or may not be surprised by: I've gone to therapy.
This is what almost 20 years of marriage looks like. What almost 28 years of being together looks like. Patience. Tolerance. Knowing each other so well. And knowing what you can and cannot accept from/for your partner.
“Carl Sagan said that if you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. When he says ‘from scratch’, he means from nothing. He means from a time before the world even existed. If you want to make an apple pie from nothing at all, you have to start with the Big Bang and expanding universes, neutrons, ions, atoms, black holes, suns, moons, ocean tides, the Milky Way, Earth, evolution, dinosaurs, extinction-level events, playtupuses, Homo erectus, Cro-Magnon man, etc. You have to start at the beginning.”

When I heard that the premise of Who Do I See in the Mirror? is all about loving one’s self, I was already sold.
Dr. Bookworm shares her favorite (free) printable Valentine’s Day card options.
I thought Love was a beautiful and inclusive ode to the many ways that we see love in our every day. What I loved most was how tactile everything felt in the story. De La Pena spun his words so I could see every image in my mind--besides what was on the page--and what's more I could feel the scent in the air, hear the music notes being played.
Our house isn’t ready for Christmas. My stack of cards, unaddressed, is still sitting there. We don’t have our tree up yet because we’ve been sick. Our stockings aren’t hung by the chimney with care. (Though Mr. Bookworm has taken our Christmas boxes down from the attic.) And though we have lots of presents, none of them are wrapped. There is no guarantee of any of those things actually getting done this weekend either—not with us being sick. And that’s okay.
The only thing that MUST get done today is the movies. Because we’re off to see The Last Jedi today.
What Do You Love About You? by Karen Lechelt starts off with a little girl and her kitten next to a pile of stuffed animals. (And the author's dedication "To My Moon" stole my heart from the very beginning.) The girl then asks each animal friend in turn what they love about themselves. Each animal then answers, and in doing so shows us what diversity can bring into our lives, but also teaches about loving ourselves too. Such a simple yet heartfelt message that isn't too didactic or over-the-top.
I STAND CORRECTED!! I can admit when I'm wrong. In an earlier post, I note (complain) that Edward doesn't tell Bella that he loves her, but he DOES. It just takes a while for him to say the actual words. Also, page 363 holds a steamy--but not R-rated--kiss that I thought was written well.
True fact: minus one week of not-being-broken-up (maybe), Mr. Bookworm and I have been together since we were dating. And while I have my faults, I like to think that Mr. Bookworm has helped me become a better person.
So don't judge (too much) when I tell you the story of how ice cream saved my marriage. Or rather, how ice cream saved my wedding to Mr. Bookworm.
Suffice it to say that I like palindromes. What's a palindrome? Something that reads the same forward and backward. Like xo, ox by Adam Rex and illustrated by Scott Campbell, my current favorite picture book. xo, ox is a perfect little unexpected love story that made me laugh out loud again and again.
"Which book reminded you what it was like to fall in love? Or which book did you fall in love with? " Dr. Bookworm polls her family and friends in this curated LOVE booklist.
Random House has a contest going on regarding the release of Nicola Yoon’s The Sun Is Also A Star. The focus? They want you to answer the difficult question of “How has love changed you?”
What I want to focus on, instead, is how becoming a mother in the first place has changed me as a pediatrician.
Dr. Bookworm talks about how THANKFUL and THOUGHTFUL can lead to WONDERFUL. With some books that promote gratitude, thoughts and wonder.
